It was November 11-th, 2008
Myself & Husband Wally were out and in our stands at 5:45 AM. The winds
were mild out of the southeast . Since our cabin is in the woods, we usually stay in our stands until around 9:00 AM,
then go back to camp for coffee & breakfast before heading back out for the afternoon hunt . While back at camp,
Wally opend the window that faces the meadow & started rattling his rattle bag, to show me the various techniques he uses
when rattling. Well about 15 minutes after he had rattled, and we still don't know if this buck responded to the rattling
or not , as the rut had just been underway for only a few day's at that point, we had just seen a doe pass through the back
of the meadow about 50 yards away . Anyhow as we sat & talked hunting I could hardly believe my eye's when out from behind
our wood pile, which is about 10 feet from camp comes a buck walking along side the camp about 20 yards out . I told Wally
OMG I said & pointed in the direction of the deer, while I got up and grabbed my bow. I walked over to the
door & asked Wally where he was, he said on the side of the cabin about 22 yards out. I slowly opend the door stepped
out & slowly walked to where I could see the buck. I could see he was a nice size deer. I quickly took aim as I still
had my qwiver on from the morning hunt. The Buck was steady walking with his head down nearly on the ground sniffing out the
doe we saw earlier evidently. I then gave out a short whistle sound , the buck jumped and hopped a couple of yards . I Prayed
he wouldn't run out of the county , just then he stopped . He was looking towards our neighbors camp. The screen door there was
open & swinging back & forth . As he did I went to full draw took aim & waited til he turned . Then
finally he turned just right giving me a clean shot !! I let the arrow fly ! The Buck dropped nearly right in his tracks with
a spine shot . I yelled YES!! Wally came right out & seen the deer down. As I started heading towards
the deer It tried getting up!! , Wally told me to wait a couple minutes to let the deer expire. I was completly freaked
out at what had just took place . What more could a hunter ask for than to have a nice buck walk right out from behind our
wood pile not 20 yards from our camp . And then to be lucky enough to take that very animal without sending him running into
the next county lol :). We then approached the now downed deer & seen he was a nice 7-point & My personal biggest
deer & to have him be a buck was a bonus. The overall drag back to camp wasn't 30 yards . I was so thrilled , Wally Hugged
me & Congradulated me on an exellant shot , Then helped drag the deer back to camp Thank you Sweetie :). My Son Jeremy,
was also Very happy when I called him to tell him the good news. Yes ( Woman Can get the big one on occassion ) "(he-he)"
, however Wally's 4 - point was a nice sized deer as well. I hope the shotgun season goes equally as well , And Wally
& myself score again hopefully on some doe"s too , we like to donate a deer a year if possible its a good thing to do
to help folks not as fortunate. So Thats my story I hope you enjoyed it as did I sharing it with you's.
